You can try teamspeak, but you gotta download it from somewhere and install it on both machines.
What game do you play if you don’t have internet conection?
Anyways, go to a friend’s house and download that software and set it up. If you both are able to play over LAN then TeamSpeak will right for you.

Yea, Turtle beaches are good, you could get them at ur local Best Buy, if your gonna buy them, my piece that plugs in my controller broke so i couldnt talk, but you can relplace them on turtlebeach.com, hope this helped.

No, but if you do want to use like you say. download a messager. (i.e. AIM, Yahoo, MSN, Live) each of those have a calling feature. with differant limits of course. Yahoo even has a phone service where you can call landlines, not just cell phones and other messager users.

I dont have a land phone
I have SKYPE for my outgoing calls to save $ on my cell bill
the SKYPE is downloaded into my computer
I had to buy a cheap headset- less than $25 that is plugged into a computer jack
after I go into the SKYPE site I use my keypad to dial

I pay less than $4 a month for all outgoing calls – local and long distance

If you use a VoIP directly from your computer you would only need a headset, but if you get a VoIP package from companies such as Vonage you would need a phone, depends on what VoIP provider you have

Having a VoIP agent is the easy part, do you have a server for the agent to use? If there is not a VoIP server for the agent to connect to, it doesn’t work.

You would also need a router that would prioritize the VoIP traffic going out on the Internet. if not, if you saturate the the uplink bandwidth, then the VoIP conversation will be distorted until the traffic rate drops.
